Overview

The leave year is the duration of time used to calculate annual and sick leave credits on a yearly basis.

The Non-Managerial Leave Year begins on May 1 and ends on April 30.

The Managerial Leave Year begins on September 1 and ends on August 31.

Carryover of Annual Leave

At the end of each leave/vacation year, the maximum number of days of accumulated, unused annual leave that can be carried over as a balance from one leave/vacation year to the next is the amount of annual leave that the employee is entitled to accrue in the two-year leave period prior to the end of each leave/vacation year. However, an employee with vested annual leave may continue to carry such time in addition to the normal two-year accrual. Foregone annual leave exceeding two (2) years’ accruals will be transferred from the annual leave balance to the sick leave balance unless a written request for permission to carry over such credit and a plan for use of this foregone annual leave in the following leave/vacation year has been approved by the appropriate Division/Office Head.

Authorization is required for each year that the employee’s annual leave balance exceeds the two-year maximum. The total annual leave balance and the balance that is approved for carryover must be placed in the employee’s personnel folder. A copy of each year’s carryover letter must be retained by the employee.

Information regarding accumulated leave balances (sick leave, annual leave, and compensatory time) is available in CyberShift.
