Overview
Holidays for DOE administrative employees are governed by the Central Calendar, which is issued annually in the fall can be found on the Central Calendar Infohub page. The calendar period runs from July through June. The holidays listed below are provided as a general guide for employees. The official Central Calendar, once issued, is the authorized listing of paid holidays and office closures for DOE Central staff for the year and is subject to change based on the Chancellor’s discretion.
Holidays
In general, NYC Department of Education (DOE) Central Offices are closed on the holidays listed below. Except for “prevailing wage rate employees” subject to Section 220 of the New York State Labor Law, any absence of per annum, per diem, hourly non-competitive employees and monthly salaried employees of the administrative staff and Central pedagogical personnel scheduled to work on these days shall be excused without loss of pay and without charge to annual leave.

- Italian Heritage Day / Indigenous Peoples’ Day
- Veterans Day
- Thanksgiving Holiday (Thursday and Friday)
- Christmas Holiday (Christmas Eve and/or Christmas Day, dependent on whether the holiday falls on a work day)
- New Year’s Holiday (New Year’s Eve and/or New Year’s Day, dependent on whether the holiday falls on a work day)
If any of these holidays falls on a Sunday, employees normally scheduled to work the immediately following Monday will be given the Monday off with pay.
If Christmas Day or New Year's Day falls on a Saturday, employees normally scheduled to work immediately preceding Friday will be given the Friday off with pay.
If any other holiday falls on a Saturday, the employee is not entitled to the prior day off.
If an employee is absent without pay on the day before or after a day when the offices of the Department of Education are closed, they may be denied pay for such a day.
Notes
All Central offices of the DOE will be open with limited staff on all dates indicated in this section, which shall be paid holidays for certain employees as described below.
Additional Paid Holidays
The days listed below are paid holidays when they fall on weekdays for employees except for "prevailing wage rate employees" subject to Section 220 of the New York State Labor Law and managerial/confidential employees i.e.,
- Pedagogic managers not covered by a collective bargaining agreement (even when receiving benefits through the CSA),
- Administrative managers, and
- Employees in Original Jurisdiction (OJ) titles receiving benefits through the City of New York Management Benefits Fund (MBF)
In addition to the regular paid holidays listed above, such days of religious observance for which the schools are closed, and which are designated by the Chancellor as holidays for employees, will be regular paid holidays when falling on regular work days. The following holidays, if they are on regular workdays, are paid holidays. This list is subject to change by the Chancellor.

Election Day
All schools and all other DOE facilities will be open. But for the exceptions noted in the next paragraph, employees working on Election Day in Borough/Citywide Offices and Central offices are entitled to be excused on another day, without charge to annual leave. The first personal business or annual leave (vacation) absence that an employee takes after Election Day will automatically be recorded as a “floating holiday.” However, that day off must be taken before September 1st of the next calendar year and must be selected in a manner that ensures the efficient operation of the office. Where feasible, employees may use the traditional date for Election Day as their “floating holiday.”
Election Day is generally a holiday for "prevailing wage rate” employees (unless otherwise modified in their Consent Determination). Election Day is a regularly scheduled workday for administrative employees covered by a collective bargaining agreement hired after June 30, 2004, and for the following managerial/confidential employees hired after December 31, 2004: pedagogic managers not covered by a collective bargaining agreement (even when receiving benefits through the CSA), all administrative managers, and employees in Original Jurisdiction (OJ) titles receiving benefits through the City of New York Management Benefits Fund (MBF).
Lincoln’s Birthday
Lincoln’s Birthday is observed as a paid holiday for all employees except for managerial/confidential employees (i.e., administrative employees covered by a collective bargaining agreement).
Managerial/confidential employees are defined as pedagogic managers not covered by a collective bargaining agreement (even when receiving benefits through the CSA), all administrative managers, and employees in Original Jurisdiction (OJ) titles receiving benefits through the City of New York Management Benefits Fund (MBF).
Lincoln’s Birthday (Observed) is a regularly scheduled workday for managerial/confidential employees hired working on Lincoln’s Birthday Observed in Central offices are entitled to be excused on another day, without charge to annual leave.
The first available personal business or annual leave (vacation) absence that a managerial/confidential employee hired on or before June 30, 2004, takes after Lincoln’s Birthday Observed will automatically be recorded as a “floating holiday”. However, that day off must be taken on or before September 1st of the same calendar year and must be selected in a manner that ensures the efficient operation of the office. Where feasible, employees may use the traditional date for Lincoln’s Birthday Observed as their “floating holiday”.
Anniversary Day
Anniversary Day is a regular workday for all staff, except for DC37 school-based, Local 372-represented employees in Brooklyn and Queens.
Veteran's Day
In accordance with the longstanding past policy and practice, whenever Veteran’s Day is celebrated on a Saturday, Veteran’s Day (Observed) is scheduled as a regular workday for all employees.
